Salad greens, young and fresh are very tasty with few calories.
Tonight we are having prawn and melon with heaps of garden salad and homemade dressing.
When planting your garden keep replanting the stock items. I like to have several small rows of lettuces, radishes and spring onions with the staggering of planting times about two weeks apart. This way there is always a row just at the right stage of eating.
Spring onions love to grow in a sunny spot and be well watered. I like to grow them in small bundles of about four plants. When you pick them you take out the whole bundle at once. They are quick maturing. I cut off the roots and then use the whole onion.
In Auckland they will grow all year round. They need to be protected from snails. Your garden centre will have trays of tiny plants or they will grow well from seeds.
